SMEs (annual wage bill under £3m)

95% of the training is already covered

Large employers (annual wage bill over £3m)

You already pay the apprenticeship levy, so you have a pot of funds to spend on apprenticeships

Additional needs

There are also extra grants available for apprentices with additional needs.

How does funding work for SMEs?

Guidance for SMEs

Affordable apprenticeships to grow your business

Apprenticeships are a cost-effective way for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to develop skilled employees and grow their businesses. Here's how funding works and how you can benefit:

  • 100% Funded for 16–18-Year-Olds: The government covers the full cost of apprenticeship training for apprentices aged 16–18
  • 95% Funded for 19+ Apprentices: For apprentices aged 19 or over, the government funds 95% of the training costs, with your business contributing just 5%
  • SMEs can benefit from levy transfers, where larger levy-paying employers share their unused funds to fully cover apprenticeship training costs for your business.

How funding works for larger Levy-paying organisations

Here’s how the levy works and how your business can benefit from it:

The apprenticeship levy is a government initiative to encourage investment in employee training.

  • Levy-paying businesses contribute 0.5% of their annual payroll to the apprenticeship fund
  • Each employer has a £15,000 allowance to offset against their levy payment.

Accessing your levy funds

Your contributions are paid into a digital apprenticeship account, which you can use to fund apprenticeship training and assessment costs. You have 24 months to use your funds before they expire and are reallocated to other employers

Apprenticeship Levy transfers

Unused levy funds can be shared with other businesses to support their apprenticeship programs. You can transfer up to 25% of your annual funds to help SMEs or businesses in your supply chain  to support local talent development while enhancing your corporate social responsibility efforts

Maximise your investment

Apprenticeships offer training across all levels, from entry-level to degree-level qualifications. They’re an excellent way to upskill your existing workforce, develop leadership and specialist skills and attract and retain top talent.
